ABOUT ABOUT

A RAISIN IN THE SUN – written by Lorraine Hansberry, directed by Theatre and Dance Program adjunct faculty Michelle Banks, and presented by special arrangement with Samuel French Inc.

The Youngers are an African-American family living in poverty on the South Side of Chicago, struggling to make do with the little money they have. They desire to pursue their American dreams like everybody else.  The matriarch of the family receives a $10,000 life insurance check from her husband’s death.  Her dream is to move her family into a new house in a nice neighborhood and to pay for her daughter’s medical school.  The son’s dream is to invest the money in a liquor store.  Tensions escalate when the daughter-in- law finds out she is pregnant with her second child and the future for the baby is uncertain.  When he loses his part of the investment money, the son realizes that he needs to think what’s best for the family.  After some soul-searching, the family moves into its new home and its American dream is realized.
