A world premiere musical about the 1890s culture war that changed the life of every Deaf person in America.

Book and lyrics by Mary Resing
Music by Andy Welchel

Right here in Washington, DC, in the volatile 1890s, two powerful and egotistical men—Alexander Graham Bell and Edward Miner Gallaudet—clashed over how the Deaf should be taught to communicate. That contest was to impact every Deaf person thereafter. This brilliant new bilingual musical tells that momentous true story through the real people who lived it, including a young girl named Helen Keller, just beginning to learn what it means to be a woman in an era of progress.

WSC Avant Bard, a professional theatre company celebrating its 25th season, is proud to co-produce Visible Language with Gallaudet University’s Theatre and Dance Program, in commemoration of Gallaudet University’s 150th anniversary.

Directed by Avant Bard Artistic Director Tom Prewitt, Visible Language features Acting Company member Kari Ginsburg as Mabel Hubbard Bell (Alexander Graham Bell’s wife), Gallaudet University faculty member Tom Baldridge as Edward Miner Gallaudet, and Gallaudet University graduate Miranda Medugno as Helen Keller.

Performances are October 21 to November 16, 2014, in the Gilbert C. Eastman Studio Theatre located in Elstad Annex 131, Gallaudet University, 800 Florida Avenue NE, Washington, DC 20002-3695 [Metro: Red line NoMa–Gallaudet.] Free on-campus parking is available.
