ROSENCRANTZ AND GUILDENSTERN ARE DEAD by Tom Stoppard

By Gallaudet University Theatre and Dance Program (other events)

8 Dates Through Apr 22, 2023

ABOUT ABOUT

If Shakespeare’s tragic Hamlet and Beckett’s absurd Waiting For Godot had a love child, it would be Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead.

Theatre finally returns to the Eastman Studio Theatre for the first time in three years and before the pandemic with Tom Stoppard’s dark and quirky comedy that retells Shakespeare's Hamlet entirely from the perspectives of the avenging prince’s doomed college buddies, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, minor characters who are often depicted as disposable, interchangeable, and unimportant.

They are summoned by the Danish king to the castle of Elsinore to decipher and report on Hamlet's sudden descent into madness.

If only it were that simple.

Gallaudet’s unique staging applies a long unconsidered Deaf lens to a modern classic, in which Rosencrantz and Guildenstern become the faces of the conventional Deaf experience within inaccessible mainstream societies and worlds shaped by the supremacy of hearing and speech, encapsulated by the Hamlet universe at Elsinore.

In this case, Deaf people are always the last to know about what's going on…right?

This production is directed with set design by Theatre and Dance program director Ethan Sinnott, with Neil Sprouse ('13) as assistant director, lighting design by Theatre Arts professor Annie Wiegand assisted by Norah Matthews ('11), costume design by Nikolya Sereda ('19), sound design by Justin Schmitz, projection design by Kylos Brannon, and technical direction by Keith Saine.
